Students,
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the main financial aid application that all students who are enrolling in a post-secondary institution must complete in order to determine if he/she qualifies for any state or federal scholarships and/or grants. The 2015-2016 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be completed online at www.fafsa.ed.gov by February 15 in order to remain eligible for TN Promise. Failure to complete the 2015-2016 FAFSA by February 15 will result in the loss of your TN Promise scholarship. Please read the the points below which highlights important FAFSA information that you can utilize to ensure you meet this crucial TN Promise deadline:
•The 2015-2016 FAFSA opened on January 1st. Please make sure that you complete this year's FAFSA; if you completed the FAFSA prior to January 1st, you need to complete the 2015-2016 FAFSA. Double check that you are filing the correct year's FAFSA.
•You will NEVER have to pay to complete the FREE financial aid application. Please make sure you file your 2015-2016 FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
Do not use any other FAFSA filing website!
•Even if you are 18 years old, you will need your parents/guardians' financial information to complete the FAFSA unless you are married, have children who receive more than half of their support from you, were in foster care, are a ward of the court, are emancipated from your parents, are homeless and/or have parents who are deceased. All could require documentation from a court. Keep in mind, the federal government defines an "independent" as an individual age 24+.
•You and your parent will create a PIN number. This PIN number is your FAFSA password that you must keep up with in order to later return to update your FAFSA or make any corrections. Keep your PIN in a secure location. If you lose your PIN number, this could delay your FAFSA filing date.
•Please make sure you have your correct social security number. Triple check that your social security number is correct on your FAFSA application! Completing your FAFSA with an incorrect social could delay your aid and cause significant issues.
•To ensure that you meet the February 15th FAFSA filing deadline, you can file based on an estimation from the previous year's tax returns and later correct. You will select "will file". Remember, choosing "will file" does not complete your FAFSA.
•If you file your FAFSA based off 2013 tax information or 2014 estimations, you MUST update your 2015-2016 FAFSA with the 2014 tax information once you complete your taxes.
•Please make sure that your first college choice listed on the FAFSA is the TN Promise eligible institution that you are going to attend after high school graduation. Your financial aid is sent to the first college choice listed on the FAFSA. If you change your institution, please make sure you update your TSAC portal, too!
•You will electronically sign your FAFSA at the end with the PIN number you created.
If you need FAFSA help or feel lost during completion of the FAFSA, click inside the answer box. Information will appear on the right side of your computer screen indicating where to find the appropriate answer. You can also contact FAFSA directly using the FAFSA helpline number:1.800.433.3243.
Several community and technical colleges are offering FAFSA assistance days that you and your guardian can take advantage of if you wish to seek FAFSA completion assistance and to ensure you meet the February 15th deadline. A full list of dates can be found by here:https://tnachieves.org/fafsa-days.
Again, it is mandatory that you complete the 2015-2016 FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov
by February 15th in order to remain TN Promise eligible. Once you complete the FAFSA, you will receive a confirmation email. If you do not receive an email, your FAFSA is incomplete. You can also reference pages 8 and 19-20 of your student handbook for FAFSA details and tips.
